InfiniBand vs. Ethernet for AI Clusters: How to Choose Your Fabric

Every AI cluster design starts with the same question: InfiniBand or Ethernet? Both fabrics now ship at 400Gb/s per port and both can carry RDMA traffic, but they behave differently at scale — and the right answer depends on your workload, your team, and your budget.

InfiniBand: the incumbent for training

NVIDIA Quantum-2 (NDR 400Gb/s) switches with ConnectX-7 adapters remain the reference fabric for large-scale training. InfiniBand's credit-based flow control delivers lossless transport without tuning, SHARP in-network aggregation offloads all-reduce operations, and adaptive routing keeps utilization high on fat-tree topologies. If your job is synchronous gradient exchange across hundreds of GPUs, InfiniBand's tail-latency behavior is still the benchmark to beat.

Ethernet: RoCE has closed most of the gap

400G Ethernet with RoCEv2 — NVIDIA Spectrum-X, Broadcom Tomahawk-based switches, ConnectX-7 or BlueField-3 in Ethernet mode — has matured fast. PFC and ECN tuning that used to require weeks of specialist work is increasingly automated. Ethernet wins on operational familiarity, multi-vendor sourcing, and unified management with the rest of the data center. For inference fleets, storage networks, and mid-size training pods, Ethernet is usually the pragmatic choice.

Decision checklist

  • Cluster size: above ~256 GPUs doing synchronous training, InfiniBand's collective offloads earn their premium. Below that, well-tuned RoCE is competitive.
  • Team skills: InfiniBand needs UFM/OpenSM familiarity; Ethernet leverages the network team you already have.
  • Sourcing: InfiniBand ties you to one vendor's roadmap and lead times; Ethernet gives second sources on switches, optics and DACs/AOCs.
  • Mixed workloads: if the same fabric carries storage, VPC and inference traffic, Ethernet's operational tooling usually wins.

Don't forget the cabling bill
