DDR5 RDIMM Buyer's Guide: Speeds, Ranks and Platform Compatibility

Scaling Trade TeamApril 22, 2026 6 min read

Server memory looks like a commodity until a compatibility mismatch idles a rack. Here is what our buyers check on every DDR5 RDIMM order.

Match speed to platform, not to the spec sheet

DDR5 RDIMMs ship at 4800 (Sapphire Rapids / EPYC Genoa era), 5600 (Emerald Rapids / EPYC Bergamo refresh), and 6400 MT/s (Xeon 6 / EPYC Turin). Faster DIMMs usually down-clock gracefully, but qualification lists (AVLs) rule in production fleets: a module that isn't on the server vendor's AVL may boot today and throw correctable-error storms after a BIOS update.

Read the part number, not the listing title

Take Samsung's M321R8GA0EB2-CCPH: the family encodes organization (x4/x8), rank count, die revision and speed bin. The same "64GB DDR5 RDIMM" description can hide 1Rx4, 2Rx4 or 2Rx8 modules with different interleaving behavior and different prices. Mixing ranks within a channel is a reliability lottery — buy uniform lots for uniform servers.

Capacity sweet spots

  • 32GB / 64GB: the volume workhorses; deepest supply, best $/GB.
  • 96GB: the non-binary capacity that often beats 128GB on price-per-GB for memory-bound virtualization.
  • 128GB / 256GB: 3DS/TSV stacked parts — check platform support explicitly, lead times run longer.

New, pulled, or refurbished?

Data-center refresh cycles put large volumes of pulled RDIMMs on the market at 30–50% below new. Legitimate pulls are a rational buy for lab, burn-in and capacity fleets — if the seller labels them honestly and tests every module. We SPD-read and stress-test memory lots before shipment and always disclose condition (new sealed / new open-box / tested pull) on the quote.

Brand notes

Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron each have platform-specific strengths, and hyperscaler qualification waves periodically drain one brand's channel supply. If your build is brand-locked by an AVL, say so on the RFQ; if it's flexible, letting us quote across all three brands routinely saves 5–12%.

Buying by the tray or by the pallet? Upload your BOM with platform details and we'll return brand-matched options with firm lead times.
