Understanding MLCC Capacitor Specifications: What Engineers Need to Know
Scaling Trade TeamFebruary 9, 2025 6 min read
Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) are the most widely used passive components in modern electronics. Understanding their specifications is crucial for reliable circuit design.
Key Parameters
- Capacitance — Nominal value and tolerance (typically ±10% or ±20%)
- Voltage Rating — Maximum continuous DC voltage; always derate by 50-80%
- Dielectric Type — C0G/NP0 (stable) vs X5R/X7R (high density) vs Y5V (economy)
- Package Size — 0201 to 2220, affecting ESR and current handling
- Temperature Coefficient — Capacitance change over temperature range
DC Bias Effect
Class II ceramics (X5R, X7R) lose significant capacitance under DC bias. A 10µF X5R capacitor rated at 10V may provide only 4-5µF at its rated voltage. Always consult manufacturer DC bias curves.
Sourcing Considerations
Popular MLCC families from Murata (GRM series), Samsung (CL series), and TDK (C series) are available through Scaling Trade with full traceability and competitive pricing.
